Catching Our Own Shadows: Photography Camp for Native American Teens (June 24-July 7, 2012)
The Summer Camp offers twelve teenagers the opportunity to live on the OCAC campus and participate in intensive arts workshops over the course of two weeks. Classes and workshopsare set up so that students have the opportunity to become prepared for a positive pre-college experience. Native American artists and instructors are hired from the surrounding communities to help guide and mentor students in creating new art. Students are required to apply for acceptance in the summer camp program. The majority of activities are held on Oregon College of Art and Craft’s beautiful 10-acre campus in Portland, OR. Through an agreement with United Indians of all Tribes Foundation the new Cowlitz Tribal Health–Seattle program provides services at the three United Indians facilities in Seattle: The Family Services site in the Columbia City neighborhood, the Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center and the Labateyah Youth Home (see below for locations). Alternatively families interested in receiving services may request that a clinical therapist highly experienced in working with the Native community visit them in their home or at an alternative site.
Clinical services offered to children through Cowlitz Tribal Health–Seattle incorporate experiential learning, cultural events and therapeutic activities. The program combines the best practice methodologies with traditional ways to provide effective therapy to children and families in need.
